Newsletter: February 26, 2014
Dear Families,
Monday was a big day with LOTS going on. The kids shared their Expert Projects with the school. Afterward, we enjoyed a wonderful "global" lunch. We then made our way into the classroom to share our Friendship Day letters. That's a lot for one morning. However, the kids handled it beautifully and enjoyed themselves so much.
As I watched them share their work I couldn't help but reflect on what confident teachers, learners, and speakers these kids are. They spoke to their peers from other grades. They spoke to teachers who stopped by to hear what they had been learning. They spoke to a group of twenty-four USC undergrads who were in the building at the time. They spoke to parents who stopped in to see their work. And through all this they represented themselves, and each other, tremendously.
I was not sure how much food we would have for our global lunch so as a precaution I had the kids prepare to eat their normal lunch. As it turned out, we did pretty good in regards to food. Actually, we did far better than "pretty good." We had a lot. And the diversity of dishes was quite impressive. There were spring rolls, egg rolls, tacos, Italian cookies, French bread, pizza, and much, much more. No one went hungry, that's for sure. It was a nice way to celebrate our expert projects and to spend quality time together.
The last activity, Friendship Day letters, was an opportunity not only to practice our letter writing skills and speak out to an audience, but to highlight the specific qualities we value and appreciate in each other. The kids took turns coming to the front of the room to read and receive their letters. Thanks so much for the help you provided at home with these. They turned out very nicely.
Ms. Nozsa and I will post another letter soon detailing the work we've been doing in the classroom around reading, writing, science, math, and explorations. Look for that in the next few days.
Thanks,
Chris
