Dear Families,
It's hard to believe February is already coming to a close. I know it's a cliche but it really does feel like this school year is flying by. As we head into March, we're set to begin all sorts of new inquiries as readers, writers, scientists, and mathematicians. But until then, here's a glimpse into the work we're wrapping up right now. Enjoy!

Math
In math this week, we have been building our conceptual understanding of division by finding real-world examples. We have been working to find ways in our lives that we use division and times when it is important for us to divide things evenly. Please feel free to send in pictures that you find of division in your everyday lives!
Aidan and Maya work to find multiplication and division sentences using pictures of arrays.
Social Studies
This week, we concluded our study of West African civilizations prior to colonization. We researched different aspects of West African life in groups such as clothing, food, architecture, and religion. The groups then created presentations to share important facts with us that they had learned.

Embryology
Have you heard about our eggs? If not you need to ask your child about it because it's incredibly cool. We're partnering with 4-H to learn about embryology - in this case, the development of chicks inside an egg.
On Monday our contact, Rosemary, taught us how chicks change from day-to-day as part of their 21-day journey from embryo to chirping chick. She read us a picture book and shared a slide show. She also helped us set up the incubator so it would be nice and warm for the eggs. We have to monitor both the temperature and humidity to ensure our chicks develop properly.
On Wednesday we received our eggs. There were twelve in total. These included Easter Eggers, Harans, Mixed Breeds, Silkies, and Olive Eggers.
Our chicks should hatch on either March 16th or 17th. In the meantime, we'll be keeping track of what's happening inside the eggs and eagerly awaiting the big day.
Field Study
On Tuesday we traveled to the Koger Center to see the South Carolina Philharmonic. Mrs. Harding did a wonderful job of coordinating this trip for us.
The symphony played a number of different songs for us, many of which the kids were able to sing along to.
