Newsletter: Monday, October 7th

Hello Everyone,

We had a great time at the zoo on Friday. The weather was perfect and there were plenty of smiles and giggles to go around. I probably could have taken a nap on the bus ride back to school but evidently NO ONE else was all that tired. Go figure!

This past week many of the kids shared their teaching projects. This work will continue this week. In a few days we'll reflect back on each of these experiences and think about what sorts of instruction have been provided, ways in which we helped one another, and what this all means in regards to helping others learn new things. There are many times when the kids support each other in their learning. Learning to do this carefully will only serve to benefit everyone all the more.

In math we've been exploring coins. The kids spent some time with a stack of change and a hand lens observing all those pictures and words covering the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. They came back with plenty of questions: "What's 'E Pluribus Unum?", "Who is this guy?", "Is that the Lincoln Memorial?". Coins are a great resource for helping us think more about skip counting. This work will build into our future work around multiplication and division.

A few upcoming dates...

This Thursday is Curriculum Night. Our class will share out some of our work with you from 6:15 - 7:00. At that time everyone with a child in grades 3-5 will move to their classroom. Their Curriculum Night is from 7:00 - 7:45. Our second graders will stay in the room with me during that time so you can focus your full attention on your older child. Our plan for Curriculum Night is to sing you a few songs and share what we are learning about reading.

Our class will host Gathering on Friday, October 25th at 2:20. We hope you can make it!

The Walk-a-Thon is Saturday, October 26th. The kids can begin walking anytime between 9 -10, whatever best fits your Saturday schedule. We'll have volunteers (parents) standing at the trackside marking tallies on the kids' hands as they walk by. This will be our method of keeping track of their distances. Afterward everyone is invited back up to CFI for a picnic lunch. I'll provide lemonade and a cool treat if you can bring a blanket and a picnic lunch for your family. It should be a great time! The kids have been excited to come in and tell us about the pledges they are collecting. We have had good conversations about the fact we are working to help others - not compete with each other. They really seem to have taken this to heart.

As always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.

Chris
