Morning Meeting: Standing/Kneeling During the Anthem

During Morning Meeting today I shared a news story with the kids about the events surrounding yesterday's NFL games and all the discussion that is happening around silent protests and the anthem. We watched a student news segment on the Smart Board that spoke to this story as well. Some of the kids were surprised to hear about this but the majority had already heard what was happening - even if they weren't really sure why it was happening. It made for a good discussion. For my part, I tried (as I always do) to ask probing questions of the kids to see what they understand as well as to push their thinking to consider how multiple people might view a singular event or issue. That said, I worked from the assumption each of us have a shared goal to create a just society in which all people are valued, respected, and safe.

In a week or two I'm going to ask the kids to bring in a news article (print form) or news item (not in print form) to share with the class. This could be about anything going on in the world, our country, or our community. It could include stories of people doing great things in our community, debates over laws or practices, important events happening around us, weather-related events, etc. So keep an eye out for something you think your child might be interested in sharing with us.
