Great First Day!

What a day! It was so nice to be back and at full speed. There was lots and lots going on today. Our highlights included learning our first song together, reading quite a few books, an high-energy game of O-ball at recess, and working to learn a new classroom. The kids did a marvelous job.

Tonight the kids are bringing home two assignments. The first is a square of construction paper on which they need to write their name and fill the rest of the space up with photos, drawings, or any other artifacts that will help me better understand who they are and what they love. They need to bring these back in with them on Friday so we can each share them out to the class. Here's a photo of mine...

Their other assignment is to bring in a favorite book from home they can tell the class about. It could be a picture book or chapter book and could be any genre at all. Just make sure it's one they love! A few of the kids swore they didn't have any (or many books at home) and didn't read much but I assured them this couldn't possibly be true. Others said they don't have a single favorite but they do have a whole shelf-full of books they really enjoy. I told them to pick any one of these and be prepared to tell us why it's such an enjoyable book. They need to bring these in by Friday. Here's the book I'll be sharing...

I hope they have great stories to share from today. The first day of school really can be a bit strange in that it's not a regular day at all. That said, there's always plenty of opportunity for fun. Enjoy the pics!
