Homework: Monday, 10/20 - Monday, 10/27

The kids are working this week to revise, edit, and publish a draft from their writers notebooks. This will be a draft they have written during our genre study of memoir. Today I shared a rubric with them that is being used as a revision/editing checklist. To help them meet next Monday's deadline, I've broken this process into parts to help them make certain they are on-track in terms of the timeline of their progress. Some will bring this home each night. Others will finish it all in the classroom. This will differ by individual. Please note: your only responsibility is to see that they are meeting deadlines. You do not need to edit or revise a single thing with this piece. In fact, I'd prefer you didn't. I want this piece to reflect their own work and abilities as third grade writers.

Here are the deadlines...

Monday - Select a "small moment" story and complete a detailed timeline for this story on a sheet of loose-leaf notebook paper.

Tuesday - Complete a two-page draft of this story (this should be the equivalent of a loose-leaf filler sheet which is larger than the paper in our writing journals). Two pages would be the front and back of one sheet or two fronts. Many of you probably already have this in your writing journal from your work over the past few weeks. If you're story is shorter than this be sure to write a draft and have it ready for tomorrow when your learning partner will go over it with you.

Wednesday - Write three different possible leads for your story. You might consider one that begins with dialogue, one that begins with action, and one that begins with a description of the setting or a character. Each lead should be at least two or three sentences long.

Thursday - Share your piece with your learning partner. They should give you lots of feedback. Any suggestions they offer should be marked up on your draft in colored pencil. They should be looking to see if it makes sense, if you've used dialogue, if there are any places where you might share more detail or description, and if you've used the proper punctuation and capitals.

Friday - Write your final draft using your very best handwriting. This is due in class on Monday. Remember that it needs to be at least two pages long. That's why we used the timelines - to help you map out all the parts of the story. The final draft should be written not as a telling of what happened ("First we did this and then we did that") but written in a way that puts us in that moment with you so we can see and hear it in our mind.

You will have a full hour in the classroom each day to work on this. You may also come in early before school or use your Exploration time when you arrive.

Have fun and good luck. I'm here to help if you need it!

Mr. H
