Summer Letter from Mr. H

Hey Everyone!

I hope you all are having a wonderful summer so far. It seems like the temperature was nice and cool for those first few weeks but it has since become awfully hot. I imagine a lot of you might be spending time playing at the swimming pool, in a lake, or in the sprinklers around your house. Oddly enough, I haven't been in the water at all this summer.

I've received a couple of post cards from you all. The first came from Ella who was travelling in New York state.

The second one to arrive was from Colin. He was having a great time with his family in Myrtle Beach.

I've not been on any trips yet this summer but my family and I are headed to Washington, DC this Friday to spend a few days. While we are there we're going to tour the White House, go to a Nationals baseball game, see the fireworks on the 4th of July, and check out some museums. It should be a lot of fun but I'm guessing it will also be very, very crowded.

I am taking my very last course at USC this summer and tomorrow is my last day. I'm pretty excited about being finished with my classes because I've been in school for 27 years. Yes, twenty-seven years! Once I'm finished with this class I have one more BIG paper to write and then I really am finished. This big paper will probably be around 200 pages long so it'll take me a while to write. I would love to finish it around the same time you finish third grade. Here's a pic of me working on it on my back deck. You can see my dog in the background.

In addition to going to class and doing homework I've been learning to rock climb this summer. Ty and I are going to a climbing gym downtown about four times a week to practice. I'm not very strong, have poor balance, and am very afraid of heights. These are not things that helps one be a good rock climber! However, I'm working to get better at each. Yesterday I climbed to the top of the very high wall and looked down. The ground looked soooooo far away. I tried to stay calm. I was supposed to let go of the wall and let the rope slowly lower me back to the floor. Well...there was NO WAY I was letting go of that wall. I climbed back down instead. We are going again tonight and my goal is to try to let go of the wall this time and trust that the rope will catch me. My hope is that by the end of the summer I will not be nearly as afraid of heights anymore. Here's a few picks of Ty climbing. These are from the Bouldering Room where the walls are not nearly so high. You don't even need to wear a rope in this room because you can only fall about ten or fifteen feet at most.

I've also been running. I did a fun race called the Glo Run with Ms. Whitecotton. I wore a costume during the race. It was a lot of fun. Check out my wig and cool socks!

I also met Mr. Smith for lunch one day and we played darts. Mr. Smith loves to play darts and is very good at it. I'm pretty sure he was going easy on me so I wouldn't feel too bad. Regardless, he still wound up beating me very badly.

That's it. I hope you all are having adventures of your own - whether they are in the form of big trips, play dates with friends, camps, or doing fun stuff around your house. Feel free to write me a note or an email letting me know what you're up to. I'd love to hear about it. Also, don't forget I'll be at the Sandhills library Tuesday night at 7 if anyone is interested in saying hello and checking out books.

I'll write you another letter or two over the course of the summer. In the meantime, don't forget to keep reading and jot down the names of many of the books you're reading for the project you are bringing back in this August. I can't wait to find out what sorts of great books you found.

Your buddy,
Mr. H
