Class Walk-a-Thon on October 26th

At the beginning of the school year I mentioned the prospect of our class participating in the Walk for Life this fall. We've since been heading out to the middle school track two mornings each week, on Wednesdays in place of our Morning Meeting and on Thursdays in place of Explorations. Right now we are walking anywhere from a half-mile to a mile. The morning air is cool and refreshing and the kids enjoy grouping up with their friends to share stories and giggles as they make their way around the quarter-mile loop. Some run, but most walk. I see this as a great opportunity to get some exercise, bond with one another, and do something to support our community.

However, rather than participating in the Walk for Life we have decided to conduct our very own Walk-a-Thon at CFI. This is because registration for the Walk for Life is $25 per walker. I was afraid this level of financial commitment would prevent some from participating - including my own family of six.

So...we're planning to meet at the middle school track at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 26th for a three mile walk. We'll have a water table, snacks, and music. Afterward we can all walk back up to the Storybook Garden at CFI for a picnic lunch. I predict we'll finish lunch around 12:30 or so.

The kids will soon develop and create sponsor sheets. This will allow families to determine what level of participation they are comfortable with. Those choosing not to collect donations are still encouraged to come walk and share in the fun.

In preparation for this event, of which all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society, we will discuss the work the ACS does to not only support those living with cancer but to work toward finding a cure as well. We'll have classroom visitors come in and share first- and second-hand experiences with cancer and support organizations. If you have a story to share PLEASE let us know. We'd love to have to you in!

We're inviting Ms. Mahowald's class to join us for this event. All families are welcome to walk as well. The more, the merrier!

If you have any questions please let me know.

Chris
