Homework: Wednesday, 9/18 - Monday, 9/23

With no formal homework coming home on either Monday or Tuesday, the past few nights I've asked the kids to continue reading their books. At the end of independent reading time  in the classroom I always say "Find a good stopping place and drop your book into your book bag so you can continue reading it tonight." I hope you have been noticing these books coming home. It's important to learn to become so engaged in a story you want to finish it rather than just randomly grabbing something from a shelf at home to "do twenty minutes of reading homework." This doesn't reflect the sorts of reading we do as adults. Of course, there are times, too, when the kids finish their book at school and find great comfort in reading a favorite from bookshelf at home!

The homework this week is...

1. Read each night and use the log to write a brief three-sentence summary. There are spots for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and then either Saturday or Sunday.

2. Yesterday the kids highlighted three pages in their math workbooks to complete at home by Friday. These should not take any more than ten to fifteen minutes total.

3. Begin thinking about something you know how to do that you could teach the class during Explorations time. It could be a craft, a game, a trick, a song, a skill, etc. This is an opportunity to share something you enjoy and are pretty good at. You get to be the teacher! We'll begin sharing these next week. We'll begin with those who feel they are ready. It'll take us some time to give everyone an opportunity to teach us so I imagine this will last the next couple of weeks. We'll talk about specific ideas together in class this week.
