Distant Learning Day 3 - Friday, March 20th

After passing out packets at school yesterday morning I stopped by the store to buy some rice
for dinner. This is what I found - lots of empty shelves. Guess I was too late!

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to Day 3 of “Schooling at Home.” I hope the first two days have gone well. I absolutely love all the photos your families are sending me that show you all at work and at play.

Powered by a bowl of Goldfish, Jonah is rocking this packet.

Abby created a sweet motto for our class: "Friendship, learning, inquiry, and baby chicks."

Maya and Talia took a much deserved break from their work to enjoy the sunshine yesterday.
Not surprisingly, they were both sporting some amazing shades that really pulled their outfits together.

I know everyone is going to be awfully jealous to know Tyler got to hang out with a ferret
for part of the day. New classroom pet? No!

William and his brothers have put together binders to help organize the work they're doing each day.
Smart idea!

Keep the photos coming. Also, if you want to send me an email telling me what you’re up to I will GLADLY respond right back. If anyone has forgotten their email address have your parents let me know and I’ll get it to you. Once you have your email address you can also access all your Google apps. I really hope that if we have to stay out of school much longer I’ll be allowed to start giving you assignments through Google so you can continue writing your biographies and your “free write” pieces. But we’ll see what happens.

You might be wondering how our chicks are doing? Well, they are now three days old and quite active. They love to huddle up together and are no longer pecking at one another nearly so much as they did the first day or two. The lady who brought them to us, Rosemary, is coming this morning to take them back to the farm. As I mentioned, I’m keeping three of them to add to our flock here at home. I’ll send pics of them as they grow. In the meantime, here’s what they’re looking like right now…

It looks orange in the picture because of the red heat lamp I use to keep them warm.

They really weren't sure about me sticking my camera down in the brooding box to take this photo.

This chick decided to attack my phone as I was snapping the photo. S/he was running full
speed at the phone as I quickly pulled it away.

Ms. Myers came over last night to see the chicks. She thought they were so cute.  We kept our six feet of social distancing so we wouldn’t have to worry about spreading the virus.

This chick pooped in Ms. Myers' hand just after I took this photo. She yelled,
"Ewww, it's warm. Why is it warm?!"

Today is Day 3 of your Home School work. Here are a few notes to help you get started.

Reading: The work you all have for reading is so much easier than what we normally do in the classroom. That said, keep at it and make sure you get everything done. If you’re reading a really good book for your independent reading, feel free to email me to let me know what it is. I’d love to know!

Writing: Mr. O’Keefe and I changed the writing assignment that was originally listed in your packets for today. I am sending you a Newsela article to your family for you to read then respond to. It’s an interesting article I think you’ll enjoy. In your response tell me: (1) what was the article about, (2) what were you thinking about it as you were reading, and (3) what have you been doing at home to avoid having similar issues?

Math: The word problem today is tricky. You’ll need to think about it carefully before solving it! Everything else is pretty straight forward and easy to understand. That said, there may be one or two fraction problems you’ll need help with since we didn’t start this inquiry yet.

Science and Social Studies: There are pretty simple today. I don’t think I need to add any extra instructions. That said, if you’d ever like to read a news article and talk about it with your family instead of choosing one of those social studies items, please do. This would be a great alternative to what is on that sheet.

That's it. Have a great Friday and a great weekend. The weather is beautiful so I hope you all are getting lots of time playing in the yard!
