Newsletter: Wednesday, February 11

Last Friday I had the pleasure of sharing the classroom with two of my kids for Job Shadowing. My daughter Ainsley (6th grade) and son Muluken (7th grade) lived the life of a teacher for a day. During explorations Ainsley taught the kids to make miniature food sculptures from clay.

Muluken enjoyed teaching some of the kids to play Othello.

Later in the morning they helped the kids get their artifacts and reflections ready for Student-Led Conferences. In the afternoon they worked with our book clubs to create plans for a "book trailer" advertising the book they had just read in hopes of convincing others to try reading it as well.

From Mrs. Jones...

This week we began an investigation about rocks and minerals. On Monday we read A Rock is Lively, a great book that took us on a journey through the rock cycle. We took a walk around the school to find objects that we thought were made of either rocks, minerals, or both. We found quite a few and have compiled them on a class list. We also found the University of Oregon's Natural History museum website, which allowed the kids to virtually explore the exhibitions. The exhibitions included every day items and what mineral(s) they were made of. The most surprising to us were the electronics that use gold and silver as conductors.

Today, each student got a mineral and magnifying glass. As a class we discussed some characteristics that can be used to describe rocks and minerals. They carefully observed and sketched their mineral in their science journals. Everyone is really excited about this investigation and I can't wait to see where the class takes it!

We will also be finishing up our book club book trailers this week. Prior to beginning our trailers we watched several book trailers of books we have previously read as inspiration for our book trailers. We then listed characteristics that we noticed, including music, drawings, pictures, and not giving away the whole story.  All the groups have worked very well together putting their information into a Google presentation. We will be sharing these with the class on Tuesday.

I have really enjoyed my time thus far and am exited for what else is in store!
