Newsletter

Hello Everyone!

This week we've been enjoying another round of book clubs. The kids began by selecting the book they wanted to read. We reviewed strategies for finding "just right" books. The kids suggested we might...

look at the cover
read the back cover
find an author we already like
find a series we enjoy
read the first page
ask someone who has read the book before

These are all great strategies. The kids took ten or fifteen minutes to browse through about fifteen different titles before settling on the one they wanted. Once groups were formed they sat down and planned out their reading. This meant negotiating how many chapters they would read each day. Most chose to read two or three chapters at a time. This reading takes place at school during the time we usually do independent reading. Should someone not complete their reading they bring the book home that night.

The kids have been meeting nearly every day to share and discuss their thinking with others who are reading the same book. These discussions have been places where they recap key events, ask questions, make predictions, share feelings, and so on. I'm so impressed by how well they are able to take on this work.

We are also getting ready for Student Led Conferences. The final schedule is posted below. This will be a great time for the kids to share their growth and set goals for their learning over the remainder of the year. Please come prepared to listen carefully and to share your own appreciations and goals for your child!
